RSSC presented its annual report
On December 28, a joint meeting of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS was held. The first vice-president of ANAS, academician Ibrahim Guliyev chaired the meeting online through the Zoom platform. The meeting was attended by members of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS and the Scientific and Technical Council of the RSSC ANAS, heads of departments of the Center and specialists.
The general director of the Center, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli presented the final report on the scientific research activities of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences for 2020.
Because of the spread in 2020 in Azerbaijan, as well as throughout the world, of the Covid-19 pandemic, the general director noted that the Republican Seismic Survey Center was included in the list of state bodies allowed to operate by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In this regard, the general director said that there were no delays in the activities of the Center, adding that all the issues reflected in the documents of the RSSC were resolved.
Noting that 2020 went down in the history of Azerbaijan as the year of the liberation of our occupied lands - the Year of Victory, Gurban Yetirmishli congratulated all our people and conference participants on this event.
RSSC employees also took part in the Patriotic War. The general director noted that the employee of the Saatly station, senior lieutenant Sadig Khakhiyev was awarded the medal "For the liberation of Djabrayil" in accordance with the order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On rewarding the medal "For the liberation of Djabrayil". He also noted that during the war, the Association of Seismologists of Azerbaijan donated 10,000 manat to the Fund for Assistance to the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, and the RSSC Trade Union donated 1,000 manat. The general director also noted that the families of the soldiers and martyrs working in the Center were taken into account and they were provided with appropriate material assistance.
Then the general director spoke about the research work. According to him, in 2020, 3579 local earthquakes were registered by seismic stations of the RSSC. 6604 earthquakes have been registered in Azerbaijan and adjacent territories. The Monitoring Center also recorded 2,301 remote earthquakes. To date, 74 earthquakes with a magnitude ml>3 have been registered in Azerbaijan and adjacent regions. Noting that 20 perceptible earthquakes have occurred in Azerbaijan and adjacent territories, the general director also informed about the seismicity in the country and complex studies in this direction.
It was noted that 62 stations are currently conducting research in the country. In 2021, 22 more stations will be installed, as a result of which the number of stations will reach 84. The issue of opening seismic stations in the liberated areas is already included in the RSSC plan for 2021. In 2021, it is planned to install seismic stations in Shusha and Djabrayil, in 2022 - in Kelbadjar and Gubadly regions. In the coming years, it is planned to install seismic stations in Zangilan, Lachin, Khodjavend, Terter (Talish village), Aghdere and Khankendi, which will allow the RSSC to carry out full-fledged seismic observations in the country.
The meeting also presented the results of geophysical, geodynamic and geochemical studies carried out at the Center. The issues of cooperation of the Center with international seismological organizations, provision of operational information and interaction with the press were also discussed. It was noted that the Information Department of the Center was awarded the "Certificate of Honor" of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS for active work.
After the presentation of the report, the first vice-president of ANAS, academician Ibrahim Guliyev, academician Akbar Feyzullayev, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences Chingiz Aliyev and others expressed their opinion. The report was adopted unanimously.
