Further discussions on cooperation between RSSC and Oxford University took place

On September 28, further discussions were held at the level of the working group to expand cooperation, as well as the implementation of joint scientific projects between the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS, Oxford University UK and BP. The online discussion was attended by the head of the department "Dynamics of Earthquake Sources" of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS, Ph.D. in Geology and Mineralogy, Associate Professor Sabina Kazimova, Professor of the University of Oxford UK Richard Walker, Ph.D. of Earthquakes and Active Tectonics of the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Oxford Ian Pierce and Nazim Abdullayev, BP Leading Geological Exploration Specialist.

Within the framework of the project, a discussion of the work done in the partner countries took place. Representatives of Oxford University reported on the results of field work carried out in Aghsu, Ismayilli, Salyan and Goychay districts in 2022, spoke about the preliminary results of paleoseismological studies conducted on the territory of Azerbaijan, and about the work to be carried out in the future.

According to the cartographic data created on the basis of satellite images in the Salyan district carried out by the employees of Oxford University UK, a number of very active landslide faults and numerous earthquake zones with modern seismicity have been identified. In addition, samples of the displaced river terraces were taken to determine the rate of geological displacement. The purpose of the research is to determine the direction and role of the geological development of displacement type faults. In addition, satellite images of areas with mud volcanoes were analyzed.

Professor Richard Walker from Oxford University UK said that the seismological and geophysical studies carried out in the Caspian Sea basin are of great importance. These studies will also allow a more detailed study of earthquakes in the Caspian Sea.

The meeting also discussed joint projects to be implemented within the framework of bilateral cooperation, personnel exchange of experience and work to be done in 2023.
