On December 14, a joint meeting of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS and the RSSC was held at the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.

The meeting, where the final report on the scientific and organizational activities of the Republican Seismic Survey Center in 2023 was discussed, was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, Vice-President of ANAS, Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, Academician Ibrahim Guliyev and members of the department, General Director of the RSSC of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli, as well as heads and employees of the relevant departments of the Center.

The meeting was attended by managers and employees of RSSC seismic stations located in different regions of the republic via the Zoom platform.

Speaking at the meeting, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the Republican Seismic Survey Center had done very important work over the year and achieved very good results.

The President of ANAS noted that during the year the Republican Seismic Survey Center throughout the country carried out work at a high level. He said that after the earthquake in Turkey earlier this year, Azerbaijani seismologists, under the leadership of the general director of the Republican Seismic Survey Center, in order to support the brotherly country, conducted a study in the city of Kahramanmarash, which became the epicenter of the earthquake.

Next, the General Director of the RSSC, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli presented a report on the scientific and organizational work carried out at the Center in 2023. In his speech, the General Director presented the seismic situation in Azerbaijan, as well as the results of comprehensive seismological, geophysical, geodynamic and geochemical studies carried out during the year. Noting that the dynamics of mud volcanoes on the Absheron Peninsula are being monitored using 12 newly installed seismic stations, the General Director said that the main goal of these researches is to study the connection between mud volcanoes and earthquakes.

During his speech, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli also announced statistics of earthquakes recorded since the beginning of the year. According to him, from the beginning of the year to the present, 9702 earthquakes have been registered in Azerbaijan and adjacent territories, and 4548 earthquakes have been recorded in Azerbaijan through 84 seismic stations. 83 earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 3 occurred on the territory of Azerbaijan. 37 significant earthquakes occurred in Azerbaijan and surrounding areas. The most powerful earthquake that occurred in Azerbaijan this year was recorded in the Caspian Sea. (Earthquakes of magnitude 5.6 in the Caspian Sea on July 4, 2023 and December 7, 2023).
