Seismological scientists participating in the international seismological conference met with the President of ANAS Isa Habibbeyli
Foreign scientists and seismological specialists who took part in the international conference “Seismic hazard updates in the Caucasus and implications for modern engineering practices” in Baku visited the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
Foreign guests who met with the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbayli, were first provided with detailed information about the history of the building in which the Presidium of ANAS is located, as well as the creation and development of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Foreign guests also got acquainted with the exhibition of sketches submitted for the competition to develop a new logo for the academy in connection with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of ANAS next year.
The President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli inquired about the opinion of foreign guests regarding the sketches of the presented logos. It was reported that the competition, held on May 15, will be concluded and the name of the winning candidate will be announced.
Later, the President of ANAS held an official meeting with the conference participants.
President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbayli said that the study of seismology is important for all countries of the world. Noting that seismology is a problem throughout the world, the President of ANAS said that people in all seismically active regions suffer from the consequences of earthquakes, that strong earthquakes have destructive power, destroy cities, take lives, and spoke about the importance of joint scientific work of seismologists and specialists in this area.
Noting that the science of seismology is developing in Azerbaijan at a high level, that Azerbaijani seismologists use the most modern programs and technologies, the President of ANAS noted that the relations of the Republican Seismic Survey Center with seismological centers of foreign countries and international seismological organizations are at a very good level, and this is also once confirmed at today's event. The President of ANAS also said that the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS has achieved very good results in the field of studying international experience.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli also stated that cooperation and joint scientific research with seismological centers of foreign countries and international seismological organizations is of great importance. He said that he believes that very good results will be achieved within the framework of the three-day conference taking place in Baku. The President of ANAS also said that it is important for foreign guests in Baku to get acquainted with the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS, as well as ANAS, and this is of great importance from the point of view of better development of relations.
Later, a representative of the US Energy Department, William Wanderer, spoke. Noting that cooperation with Azerbaijan is at a very good level, William Wanderer said that he is confident that this cooperation will develop even better in the future. The American representative spoke about the importance of conducting seismological research in the Caucasus region and emphasized the importance of taking into account building codes in seismic regions. Speaking about the seismological research carried out in Azerbaijan, the American guest said: “I would like to note once again that your country has achieved very good results and a lot of work is being done here.”
Professor Tea Godoladze, Director of the Seismological Monitoring Center of the Institute of Geosciences of the Georgian State University named after Ilia, noted that there are long-term relationships between the RSSC ANAS and the Seismological Service Centers of Georgia. “Seismologists from Azerbaijan and Georgia work together both at the level of the two countries and in international projects, our cooperation is at a very high level,” said Tea Godoladze, saying that she considers Azerbaijan her home. In her speech, Tea Godoladze noted that Azerbaijan and Georgia have very good relations in all areas: “I come here as if it were my home. Because our countries are friendly and fraternal countries,” she said. Tea Godoladze reported that according to the results of the work obtained by Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli and his team, they are in the forefront among seismological centers in the countries of the world.
Professor of the Canadian University of Victoria Tuna Onur noted in her speech that she has visited Baku several times and considers Azerbaijan her second homeland. Noting that every time she comes to Azerbaijan, she sees new changes and development in the country, Tuna Onur said that the development of Azerbaijan is also of great importance for the countries of the region. “Azerbaijan is my second homeland. Because Azerbaijan is our own home, our homeland.” Tuna Onur reported that seismological research in Azerbaijan is carried out at a very high level. Speaking about the importance of the conference taking place in Baku, she said that the gathering of seismologists is important from the point of view of compliance with building standards when constructing cities in countries located in seismically active regions.
Representative of the international seismological organization IRIS Andrea Chang spoke about the importance of the conference held in Baku, the seismological research carried out in Azerbaijan and the results obtained, as well as the participation of the countries of the region in joint scientific projects.
Then the representative of Uzbekistan Bosiddin Fakhriddinov spoke. The guest from Uzbekistan spoke about the importance of joint scientific cooperation and seismological research with Azerbaijan.
Eric Sandvol, a professor at the American University of Missouri, noted that cooperation between the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS and the University of Missouri has been going on for many years, and they have conducted joint research in several large projects. Eric Sandvol said: “For me, Azerbaijan is a second homeland. Because I've been coming here for many years. Every time I come, I return to my country in a good mood. We have participated in many projects together with Professor Gurban Yetirmishli and his team. We have achieved very good results. We achieve very good results in joint projects, and I am confident that our joint research will continue in the future.”
