Republican Seismic Survey Center presented annual report
A meeting of the Division of Earth Sciences of ANAS was held at the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The meeting was chaired by the academician-secretary of the Division of Earth Sciences, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov, the vice president of ANAS, director of the Institute of Oil and Gas, academician Ibrahim Guliyev, director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, academician Akif Alizade, director of the Institute of Geography named after academician Hasan Aliyev, academician Ramiz Mammadov, representatives of scientific institutions and organizations that are part of the Division, employees of the Division and RSSC attended the meeting.
Academician-secretary of the Division of Earth Sciences of ANAS, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov said that the agenda includes the presentation and discussion of the annual report on the results of scientific and scientific-organizational work of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS for 2019. The annual report of the RSSC was presented by the general director of the Center, corresponding member of ANAS, professor Gurban Yetirmishli. The general director first provided information on the structure of the organization and the status of official documents submitted to the Center during the year.
Next, the results of integrated seismological, geophysical and geochemical studies obtained by the RSSC during 2019 were announced. It was noted that during 2019 and until the submission of the annual report, RSSC seismic stations recorded 12,914 earthquakes. Noting that small earthquakes occur constantly as a result of geodynamic processes in the lithosphere and are not always felt, 5298 recorded earthquakes are local, and 6748 are regional. Of all the earthquakes that occurred in Azerbaijan, 79 - exceed the magnitude of 3 points. During the year, 25 tangible earthquakes occurred in the country. The strongest earthquake was recorded on February 5, 2019 in the area of Shamakhi-Ismayilli-Agsu. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.2. In addition, the RSSC seismic stations recorded the eruption of three mud volcanoes. Two eruptions (Gushchu volcano) were recorded on February 13, 2019 after the earthquake in Shamakhi-Ismayilli-Agsu on February 5, 2019.
In his speech, the general director of the RSSC also spoke about the work carried out and results in the field of geophysics, geochemistry and geodynamics for 2019. Information was also provided on the Center’s cooperation with foreign countries and international organizations, the work done in the field of cooperation with the media, and educational activities to strengthen human resources.
After the presentation, the head of the department of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, academician Parviz Mammadov, director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of ANAS, academician Akif Alizadeh, director of the Institute of Geography named after academician Hasan Aliyev, academician Ramiz Mammadov, head of the department of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, academician Hatam Guliyev and academician Secretary of the Division of Earth Sciences of ANAS, academician Fakhraddin Gadirov expressed their views and suggestions. The report was positively evaluated and approved by the department.
