President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli took part in the annual reporting meeting of the Republican Seismic Survey Center
On December 15, a joint meeting of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS and the Scientific and Technical Council of the Republican Seismic Survey Center was held at the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
At the meeting, the annual report on the results of scientific and research- productive work carried out by the RSSC in 2022 was presented. President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, academician Isa Habibbeyli, vice-president of ANAS, academician Ibrahim Guliyev, deputy head of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS, director of the Institute of Oil and Gas, academician Fahraddin Gadirov, members of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS, head of the Information Department of the Presidium of ANAS Agahuseyn Shukurov, members of the Scientific and Technical Council of the RSSC, as well as employees of the Center spoke at the meeting.
The President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli was the first to speak at the event. Welcoming the employees of the Center, the President of ANAS said that the Republican Seismic Survey Center is one of the important state strategic institutions of ANAS. “I believe that the employees of the Center should take their duties more seriously and responsibly both from the point of view of state interests and from the point of view of the development of science in this area. From the information that I received about the Center and the work carried out here, I positively assess the activities of the Center. Here, production work is carried out related to seismological research conducted on the territory of the republic. There is also development in the scientific field.”
The annual report of the Republican Seismic Survey Center was presented by the General Director of the Center, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli. Presenting the report, the general director first discussed the activities carried out within the organization during 2022, the work done by the Center within the framework of State programs, as well as the implementation of regulatory legal acts, public relations, international cooperation, the integration of education and science both with local, as well as foreign universities. He spoke about the results obtained in the field of cooperation. Professor Gurban Yetirmishli said that in 2022, for the first time in Azerbaijan, paleoseismological studies were launched in cooperation with Oxford University in the UK. These studies are very important in terms of studying historical earthquakes and conducting scientific research on the changes in relief caused by these earthquakes.
Further, the General Director spoke in detail about the complex seismological, geophysical, geochemical studies carried out at the Center during the year, and the results obtained. Professor Gurban Yetirmishli also spoke on statistical information on local, regional and remote earthquakes, as well as on underground explosions recorded by the Center's seismic stations during 2022. According to him, 12,762 earthquakes were registered in just a year. Of these, 2949 are local, 4645 regional and 3776 remote earthquakes. In addition, 1391 underground explosions were recorded. This year, 17 tangible earthquakes were registered. There were 56 earthquakes with a magnitude above 3. Speaking about the participation of the RSSC in international grant projects, the head of the Center announced the completion of the installation of 22 new seismic stations brought to our country under the international grant project. For the first time in the world, 12 such stations were installed around the mud volcanoes on the Absheron Peninsula, so that with the help of these stations it was possible to monitor the dynamics of mud volcanoes and the processes taking place there.
At the reporting meeting, the work of the RSSC was considered during the year, carried out in the department of information support, subjects in the specialty and foreign language courses in order to increase human resources, as well as educational activities carried out in universities and construction organizations regarding the rules of conduct during an earthquake were also brought to intelligence. Later, the issues of interest were clarified by the General Director.
Academician Parviz Mammadov, Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Ibrahim Guliyev, Deputy Head of the Department of Earth Sciences of ANAS, Director of the Institute of Oil and Gas, Academician Fakhraddin Gadirov spoke about the presented report, who highly appreciated the work done. They also put forward their proposals to further accelerate the process in the field of future research and training of scientific personnel.
The President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli, highly appreciated the presented report and said that the report was quite complete and interesting. The President of ANAS noted that one of the main issues facing the Academy at the moment is to increase the potential of young scientific personnel, and most importantly, special attention should be paid to the training of doctors of science. In his speech, he noted that it is important for young scientists to take internships in foreign countries and participate in international scientific events. The President of ANAS emphasized the importance of joint cooperation and joint work between the scientific organizations of the Academy. In this regard, the RSSC of ANAS and the Institute of Archeology, Ethnography and Anthropology of ANAS noted the interest in conducting seismic surveys around the ancient burial mounds and the importance of further expanding cooperation in this direction.
The President of ANAS said that in order to increase the interest of young people in science, the publication of the scientific journal of the Council of Young Scientists and Experts of ANAS will be increased from two to four times a year. ANAS also plans to award authors of articles published in foreign journals with an impact factor.
In conclusion, the President of ANAS congratulated the employees of the Center on the upcoming New Year and December 31 - the World Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis, and conveyed his best wishes to them.
