Number of earthquakes registered in Azerbaijan in the first six months of 2021 announced

For six months of 2021, the "Bureau of earthquake research" of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS registered 6404 tremors. Of these, 2413 were local (the territory of Azerbaijan), 1492 were regional and 1350 distant earthquakes. At the same time, 400 weak shocks were recorded by one station. The Bureau also recorded 749 explosions and 3 (three) mud volcanic eruptions. 11 tangible earthquakes occurred in Azerbaijan and adjacent territories. In the first six months of this year, the strongest earthquake in Azerbaijan was recorded in the Caspian Sea. An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was felt in coastal areas and in the city of Sumgayit. An earthquake of magnitude 4-3 was also felt in the regions bordering with Armenia. In the first six months of this year, the number of earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 3 in the territory of Azerbaijan amounted to 36. The last of the recorded mud volcanoes was the eruption of a mud volcano on July 4 on Dashli Island, where the eruption reached 500 meters.

In the first half of 2021, seismicity was weak on the southeastern slope of the Greater Caucasus - Zagatala-Balakan zone. In the Shamakhi-Ismayilli, Talysh and Gusar-Guba zones, the activity was high. High seismicity was observed in Agstafa and Shakhbuz. In the Lesser Caucasus, in the Caspian Sea and on the Iranian-Turkish border, seismicity was weak.
