Baku hosts the VII International Conference "Seismology and Engineering Seismology" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev

On June 6, 2023, the VII International Conference "Seismology and Engineering Seismology" dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev, organized together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS, began its work.

Before the opening ceremony of the conference, the participants visited the Alley of Honor for the Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev and the outstanding ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva. Representatives of state institutions, seismologists and specialists from foreign countries, as well as heads of ANAS and scientific organizations took part in the opening ceremony of the conference.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, the President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli said that this year various events were held in our country dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev. Saying that the Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev played a big role in the development of seismology in Azerbaijan, the President of ANAS noted that after the earthquake that occurred on February 6 this year in fraternal Turkey, attention to the field of seismology has increased throughout the world. In his speech, the President of ANAS spoke in detail about the ongoing seismic research in Azerbaijan, the results obtained and the upcoming tasks.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the conference, he said about the challenges facing scientists working in the field of seismology, and methods of studying earthquakes. In his speech, he spoke about the earthquake that occurred in Turkey on February 6 this year. Professor Hasan Mandal, noting that Azerbaijan provided unprecedented support to the fraternal country in eliminating the consequences of the earthquake, expressed gratitude on behalf of his country to the leadership and people of Azerbaijan. After his speech, the President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbeyli presented a memorable gift related to Azerbaijan to the head of TUBITAK, Professor Hasan Mandal.

Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Lieutenant-General Etibar Mirzoyev spoke about natural disasters, rescue operations during the earthquake that occurred in February this year in fraternal Turkey, and the problems that arose during the elimination of the consequences of natural disasters. The Deputy Minister said that no one is immune from natural disasters. Therefore, each institution must be careful in doing its job.

 Seismologists from foreign countries Ian Pierce (Oxford University, UK), Eric Sandwall (University of Missouri, USA), Tea Godoladze (Director of the Center for Seismological Monitoring of the Institute of Geosciences, Ilya State University, Georgia), Boris Trifonov (Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Physics of the Earth) delivered a welcoming speech.

 General Director of the RSSC, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli noted the great role of the Nationwide Leader in the development of seismological science in Azerbaijan. The General Director said that the construction of a network of modern seismic stations in Azerbaijan was carried out as a result of the direct instructions of the Nationwide Leader and his attention to this area. Stating that the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, always supports seismologists in this direction, the General Director noted that currently 84 seismic stations operate in our country, and the dynamics of mud volcanoes is monitored for the first time in the world using seismic stations. The General Director of the RSSC informed the participants in detail about the complex of seismic-geophysical-geochemical studies carried out by the Center and the results obtained. 

 Then the conference continued with the presentation of reports chaired by the vice-president of ANAS, academician Ibrahim Guliyev.

 It should be noted that seismologists and specialists from nine countries take part in the conference, and seismologists from fifteen countries presented their reports. Within the framework of the conference on June 8, guests from foreign countries will visit Shusha. The conference will end on June 9th.
