An event dedicated to the tragedy of January 20 was held at the RSSC
On January 19, a commemorative event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy was held at the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS.
A minute of silence was observed in memory of the martyrs who died for the independence and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Speaking at the event, General Director of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS, corresponding member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli said that the tragedy of January 20 is the bloody memory of the Azerbaijani people. Noting that in the early 90s of the last century our people experienced many tragedies, the general director said that these tragedies will never be forgotten. Noting that during the January 20 massacre, Soviet troops killed innocent people in Baku, tanks drove over people on the streets of the city, the general director also spoke about the processes taking place in Azerbaijan during the tragedy. According to him, in the late 80s of the last century, separatist tendencies of the Armenians of Karabakh arose. The former Soviet leadership also supported the Armenians on this issue. The main goal of the January 20 tragedy in Baku was to break the will of the Azerbaijani people. “The bloody massacres committed by Soviet troops in Baku on the direct orders of the Soviet leadership could not break the will of the Azerbaijani people. Because our people are strong-willed and proud.”
Professor Gurban Yetirmishli also touched upon the role of Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev in familiarizing the world with the tragedy of January 20. According to him, for Heydar Aliyev, as a sign of protest against the tragedy of January 20, it was a very big and risky step to come to the Azerbaijani representative office in Moscow and declare to the whole world that the people leading the Soviet Union were responsible for the tragedy. Because the Soviet system still existed. However, the Nationwide Leader took the risk and brought the true voice of his people to the whole world.
During his speech, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli noted that the political assessment of the tragedy of January 20 by the Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan occurred on the initiative of Nationwide Leader Heydar Aliyev. The leadership of Azerbaijan has always been sensitive to our martyrs who died for the freedom and independence of our land, and their families, and constant measures are being taken to solve their problems.
Despite all the massacres committed and the occupation of our lands for more than 30 years, the Azerbaijani army, under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Respected President Ilham Aliyev, liberated our lands from occupation in 2020, and after a 23-hour anti-terrorist operation in September last year, Azerbaijan restored its territorial integrity. General Director: “Today we are indebted to our Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Respected President Ilham Aliyev, the soldiers and officers of the Azerbaijani army, our martyrs and veterans, for the victory that we experienced.” May Allah have mercy on all our martyrs and give health to our veterans! Our army took revenge for all our martyrs. Today, large-scale construction work is underway in our territories liberated from occupation. Our villages and cities are being restored. “The “Great Return” has begun for our citizens who were forced into their homes,” he said, noting that the tragedies that befell our people will never be forgotten and will remain in our memory.
The event ended with the screening of a film dedicated to the memory of the martyrs of January 20.
