Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan visited RSSC

On October 7, Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan Juan Rodrigo Labardini Flores visited the Republican Seismic Survey Center of ANAS. The meeting held at the RSSC Monitoring Center was attended by the General Director of the Center, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli, executive director, doctor of philosophy in technical sciences, associate professor Rauf Muradov, head of the department "Dynamics of Earthquake Sources", doctor of philosophy in geology and mineralogy, associate professor Sabina Kazimova, head of the department "International Relations" Telman Djafarov and head of the department "Information" Vusala Rafiggizi.

Welcoming the guest, General Director of the RSSC, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Gurban Yetirmishli said that the National Holiday of Mexico - “Independence Day” had recently been celebrated, and congratulated the guest on this event. Professor Gurban Yetirmishli, noting that the Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan shows great interest in the comprehensive seismological research being carried out in Azerbaijan, said that this is already the third meeting of the parties. Noting that the Ambassador of Mexico played an important role in expanding relations between his country and Azerbaijan, the General Director noted that the territory of Mexico is located in a seismically active region and strong earthquakes often occur here. “Recently there was a strong earthquake, and this earthquake was also recorded by our stations.”

Professor Gurban Yetirmishli informed the guest about the work done and the ongoing research at the Center. It was reported that 84 seismic stations of the RSSC are currently operating in the territory of the republic. In addition, the Center conducts complex geophysical, geodynamic and geological studies. The General Director of the RSSC informed the guest that the Azerbaijani side is ready to cooperate with the National Autonomous University of Geophysics of Mexico in the field of seismological research. The parties may also participate in joint international projects. Azerbaijani seismologists can also support the installation of seismic stations in Mexico.

Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan Juan Rodrigo Labardini Flores said that he closely follows the research conducted by Azerbaijani seismologists and is very interested in establishing cooperation between his country and Azerbaijan in this area. Noting that the National Autonomous Geophysical University of Mexico is engaged in seismology, the diplomat said, "I think we can achieve a lot by establishing bilateral relations." Stating that the field of seismology in Azerbaijan is developing at the highest level, the diplomat noted that they would be happy if Azerbaijani seismologists share their experience with their Mexican colleagues.

The Ambassador also touched upon the Center's initiation of the study of mud volcanoes with the help of seismic stations, noting that this is a unique and rather interesting work.

At the meeting, the guest was presented with a record of the earthquake that occurred in Mexico on September 19 this year, recorded by the RSSC stations, as well as information about the workflow of seismic stations.

During the meeting, gifts were presented and a memorable photo was taken. After the meeting, the Ambassador, together with the employees of the RSSC, visited a mud volcano, around which a seismic station was installed. The guest was provided with extensive information about the monitoring of the dynamics of mud volcanoes with the help of seismic stations and the research that will be carried out in this direction.
